Good news for all EU citizens that plan to start a new life abroad: free movement of persons to the UK continues by 31 December 2020. If you want to move to the UK, you can still make this important step by the end of the year, in order to offer a better future for you and your family.

As an EU citizen who comes to the United Kingdom by 31 December 2020 - either alone or accompanied by family or friends - it is important to be aware of the EU settlement scheme. You, your family members and friends can gain full rights to live and work in the UK if each of you will apply for the pre-settle or settled status by 30 June 2021.

• EU citizens who have been living in the UK for more than five continuous years by end of December 2020 will get settled status. You can stay in the UK as long as you like if you get the settled status and you’ll also be able to apply for British citizenship if you’re eligible.
• EU nationals that have been living in the UK for at least one day by 31 December 2020 (but less than five years) will get pre-settled status. You can stay in the UK for a further five years from the date you get pre-settled status and then apply to change this to settled status once you’ve got five years’ continuous residence.

The settlement status will provide lifetime rights in the UK for all Europeans, such as the right to work, use the National Health Services (NHS) for free, enrol in education or continue studying, receive financial support, pension and benefits or travel in and out of the UK.
